Location

We are a located between the towns of Orgiva and Cadiar, in the Alpujarras of the Sierra Nevada mountains in southern Spain. The Sierra Nevada extends over 2000km through the regions of Granada and Almeria. After the Alps, the Sierra Nevada is the highest mountain range in Europe. One fifth of its peaks are higher than 3000m.

The Wellbeing Centre has some of best views in the Alpujarras, it magnificent views of Mulhacen, 3842m, the highest point on mainland Spain, and Veleta, 3394m. The mountain range formed 300 million years ago is about the same age as the Himalayas.

In 1989 the Sierra Nevada became a Natural Park to protect and conserve it. In 1999 the Sierra Nevada became the 12th and largest Spanish National Park.

The area enjoys the many plants, birds and animals that live here. There are over 2,000 plants living on the Sierra Nevada, many with healing properties. Wild mushrooms grow in many places. Please be careful, many of them are poisonous. Hawks and eagles can be seen, Golden Eagle nests in the Alpujarras. There are a variety of other smaller birds and the butterflies are particularly bright and colourful. Rainbow Trout live in the various rivers in the Alpujarras.

Weather conditions vary greatly here, depending on the time of year and the area, with beautiful spring and autumn seasons, hot summers and although winters can be chilly, the sun shines often. Our location and positioning of the mountains ensures we enjoy plenty of sunshine but are protected from the harsher climates and conditions.

The nearest towns are Orgiva and Cadiar and are the largest in the Alpujarras, both a 30 minute drive from the Wellbeing Centre. They offer a variety of shops, bars, services and restaurants. Market day is each Thursday in Orgiva, on the 3rd and 18th of every month in Cadiar and on 1st and 16th of every month in Torvizcon.

There are many charming little towns to explore within a short drive. Coffeeshop bars serve up good strong coffee and restaurants offer a rich variety of local cuisine at reasonable prices. The area produces an array of fruit and vegetables, wine, jams, ceramics, pottery and rugs. The GR7 and the GR142 footpaths run across the Alpujarras along with many other footpaths for trekking and hiking. For those who enjoy being  outside and active there is mountain biking, horse riding, hand gliding, paragliding, canoeing, climbing and fishing on offer.

For those wanting a city fix, Granada is just over an hour drive away and offers visitors all the shops, shows and services of a lively city. Just outside the city is the Alhambra. It is a vast and beautiful Moorish palace. It is being considered as an addition to the Wonders of the World. Please note, it gets very busy. It is worth booking your ticket before you visit. Please ask for assistance.
